I tried an experiment a few months ago. I read that you can actually dye yarn using pennies! It turns the yarn a mottled grey, and the longer you leave the yarn in the solution, a mixture of water, ammonia and pennies, the darker it gets.
I used 2 balls of Patons Classic 100% merino yarn in the Aran color. I wrapped them into skeins and placed them in the solution. Twice a day you are supposed to mix the solution. I wanted a fairly dark color, so I had to leave the yarn soaking for about 3 weeks! I think when I stirred the yarn I over-agitated it a little because when I took it out to rinse it the yarn was slightly felted together! It worked out o.k., though, because I was able to get the strands apart and the consistency of the yarn is more like a nubby spun yarn. I think it will be fun to make some thick socks with.
Here is a bit of a swatch I knit up and I'm pleased with the mix of the mottled greys.
My puppy, Fiona, thinks it makes a good spot to lounge. She has good taste!
